Studio introduction:

This project critiques the relevance of contemporary educational systems, questioning whether schools, both as spaces and as principles, remain fit for a rapidly changing and uncertain world. Existing models, rooted in the Industrial Revolution, emphasise conformity, standardisation, and efficiency, rather than nurturing creativity, adaptability, or resilience. Education must instead become a human-centric process that fosters curiosity, collaboration, and lifelong learning, equipping students to navigate unpredictability and shifting global realities. The design of learning environments is central to this transformation: schools should not confine students within rigid structures but cultivate belonging, identity, diversity, and ecological awareness. The studio challenged students to re-conceptualize educational spaces by creating “satellite” learning environments beyond traditional schools. Focusing on Tai O, Hong Kong, the studio explored cultural heritage, climatic conditions, local materials, tourism pressures, and depopulation, using these dynamics to investigate how localism and community integration can inspire future models of education.
