Despite rapid urbanisation, Nepal remains one of the world’s least urbanised countries. Urbanisation levels are often measured by access to infrastructure, yet many emerging urban areas lack basic services. As these communities face pressures from climate change and urban growth, significant support is needed, but gaps in public funding and technical capacity persist. In response, this studio developed a framework of social infrastructure prototypes: a collective strategy of targeted interventions addressing health, education, welfare, energy, and sanitation. Programs are defined through local surveys, responding to immediate needs and opportunities, while integrating with existing networks of action. Tested in Dhulikhel, a peripheral settlement in the Kathmandu Valley, these prototypes aim to serve as adaptable models for similar contexts across the region. By focusing on small-scale, high-impact interventions, the framework seeks to strengthen community resilience amid the twin challenges of rapid urbanisation and climate change.
