JOURNEY THROUGH TIME: GROWTH, ADAPTATION AND TRANSFORMATION

Studio introduction:

This architecture studio investigates urban renewal and cultural memory in Hong Kong. Using the proposed redevelopment of the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market as a site of inquiry, we challenge the potential for cultural homogenisation and the resulting sense of ‘placelessness.’ Students will design a ‘Space for Cultural Production’: a mid-rise, mixed-use building conceived as a living archive. This project moves beyond preservation to actively sustain vanishing local crafts and industries by integrating working production, retail, and archival functions. The architectural proposition will serve as a catalyst for new social and cultural engagement, while critically re-examining relationships between the permanent and temporary and the roles of various stakeholders. Through rigorous research and iterative making, the studio frames architecture as a dynamic agent in reconstructing cultural identity, and proposing resilient and socially engaged frameworks for the city’s future.
