BAAS Year 3 - Spring 2025
VERTICAL TAI TET TAI
Advisor:
Human Wu
Student(s):
CHAN Yat Long
Studio introduction:
The public square in front of the Tin Hau Temple Complex in Yau Ma Tei used to be a vibrant community hub. Known as the Kowloon Tai Tat Tei (lit. “a large piece of land”), this public gathering place was truly the “nightclub for everybody”; filled with hawkers, street performers of Cantonese Opera and Naamyam (or Nanyin), storytellers, and fortune tellers.
The studio takes on the former multistory car park building site south of the Tin Hau Temple public square and envisions a new facility for cultural production. Acting like a “Vertical Tai Tat Tei,” this cultural hub celebrates the heritage of street performances, connects adjacent historic buildings and public open spaces, and carefully responds to the Gascoigne Road Flyover that runs across the site.
