Student(s):

Studio introduction:

Since the 1980s, the underground music scene in Hong Kong has evolved drastically, yet remained hidden and on the fringe of the mainstream. In the most recent 10 years, it has been severely affected by the abrupt impact of the social movement and the pandemic. What is the future of Hong Kong underground music? This studio seeks for the design of a Hong Kong Underground Music Hub which: • Documents and archives the history of Hong Kong underground music scenes in various means of media; • Amplifies the everyday presence of this hidden cultural activities by catalysing the communication between musicians and the community; • Integrates intimately with the urban fabric and creates new forms of social and cultural activities; • Rethinks the role of owner, operator, builder, user and maintainer of the building; • Redefines its own role as public places to make new forms of vibrant city life; • Nurtures growth of nature in a highly congested and dense urban environment; • And rethinks the relationship between: permanent and temporary, static and dynamic, order and disorder, programmed and unprogrammed, sheltered and exposed, and indoor and outdoor.
