ELEMENTAL ARCHITECTURE

Advisor:

Jenny Hsiao

Studio introduction:

This studio situates architectural education within the historical questioning of identity, shifting from style to agenda by returning to the “primordial elements” of architecture—roof, ground, stair, wall, column, and slab—as evolving agents of design. Students dissect these elements through detail, tectonics, and non-human perspectives. The central project is a two-person dwelling that accommodates both human privacy within Hong Kong’s dense context and the needs of the site’s goat population. Drawing on Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, the brief expands architectural agency to non-human users through studies of goat behavior, perception, and social dynamics. The semester unfolds in four phases: The Detail (tectonic studies), The Non-Human & Site (Micro) (goat analysis and schematic exploration), The Site (Macro) (contextual integration), and The Element (final 1:50 articulation). Ultimately, the studio reframes architecture as historically grounded yet responsive to ecological instability and cultural continuity.
