Studio introduction:

Globally, cities are entering an era defined by regeneration rather than expansion. From empty towers to failing high street and redundant factories, governments are rethinking zoning, ownership models, and incentives to convert surplus commercial space into housing and community uses. Within this context, the studio aims to develop broadly applicable prototype models rather than idiosyncratic one-off solutions. The aim is to transform buildings conceived with little regard for their life cycles into adaptable frameworks capable of growth, change, and renewal. In this studio, Housing+ represents a necessary expansion of how we conceive housing: not as a singular entity, but as something deeply contingent on its surrounding urban fabric. Our concern is not only to carve out space within the block for sympathetic programming, but also to treat existing zoning provisions as fluid—seeking ways to transform rigid mono-typologies into systems capable of adaptation and change.
