MATERIAL LABS - BRIDGING SHORELINE INDUSTRIES AND THE SAN TIN TECHNOPOLE

Advisor:

Evelyn Ting

Student(s):

FUNG Yin Ho

Studio introduction:

Situated in the multifaceted context of San Tin, a pivotal site within the Northern Metropolis development and along the border with Shenzhen, the territory embodies stark contrasts: Hong Kong's rural voids with Shenzhen's urban density. This juxtaposition underscores themes of ecological fragility, and cross-border synergy, challenging students to envision architectures that respond to these dichotomies. Students will strategize a material cycle that symbiotically links San Tin's existing shoreline industries and ecologies with the Technopole's proposed research and manufacturing facilities. explore how traditional crafts can be preserved, modified, or hybridized with emerging technologies like AI-driven fabrication or 3D printing. Prior research will be synthesised into a comprehensive intervention: a hybrid material lab and showroom that bifurcates into functional and public-facing. The design must respond to the site's border contrasts and prioritize sustainability: Incorporate student-proposed products and address broader themes like equity and ecology.
