An Architect’s relationship with the site is situated, subjective. The architect is part of the site. So any reading of context includes a reading of your relationship to that context. Through survey studies, students will create their own translation of John Ruskin’s notion that the world surrounding us is a document, then determine how to edit and add their own chapters to this. The impetuous for reuse and memory of place is driven by the amount of demolition due to take place necessitated by the new northern metropolis. Physical elements from the site at risk of destruction yet contribute to the memory and understanding of the place will be identified and act as a point of reference for each individual understanding of the site. The intention is to explore architecture of continuity. How can new pieces of social infrastructure be integrated within the existing landscape, to support the additional development coming as part of the new northern metropolis.
