REPRODUCING LOCAL RESOURCES: 10 LOCAL MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS

Studio introduction:

The Hong Kong San Tin Technopole site is a multi-layered landscape blending agricultural heritage (e.g., dike-pond agroecosystems) and industrial-era remnants. Following the DCP framework, individual design proposals (500–1000 sqm) needs to engage with 'production' themes. This studio will explore the interplay between local resources and production (cultural, economic, environmental), culminating in a set of 10 Local Material Construction Systems that investigate tectonic qualities and sustainable development potential. Employing a dual-track methodology that integrates data-driven analysis with perceptual exploration through drawing and real-material modelling, students will critically map the local wisdoms (e.g., agricultural, industrial, energy, spatial, and cultural assets) within this zone, and explore their adaptive reuse. Potential studio outcomes include innovative Local Material Construction Systems integrating other technologies (e.g., solar power) or systems enabling resource adaptation for future needs.
