THE ACT OF SURVEYING WITH ONE'S OWN EYES

Advisor:

Chiara Oggioni and Yi Sun

Student(s):

CHANG Shi Qing

Studio introduction:

This studio takes its title from Stan Brakhage’s experimental film The Act of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes, in which the camera quietly witnesses a series of autopsies in a Pittsburgh morgue. The film’s radical proposition lies in its refusal to explain—there is no voiceover, no narrative, no mediation—only a raw, unfiltered confrontation between the observer and the observed. In this studio, Brakhage’s proposition is borrowed as a way to reclaim the act of surveying as a subjective, situated, and interpretive act. From the architect’s point of view, to survey is not to passively observe, but to actively construct meaning—to frame, deconstruct, and reassemble the complex realities of a site. Focusing on the Northern Metropolis, large-scale infrastructures and landscapes between Hong Kong and Shenzhen will be investigated, where questions of border, movement, and territorial transformation become spatial, political, and ecological all at once.
