BAAS Year 2 - Fall 2025

PUBLIC ADDITIONS - RUNWAY 1331

Advisor:

Roberto Requejo

Student(s):

BROOKS Joshua Taylor

Studio introduction:

The studio centers on the Kai Tak site, where an abandoned COVID-19 isolation facility is to be repurposed into Runway 1331 — a vibrant hostel and cultural hub aimed at Hong Kong’s youth. While the existing building primarily provides accommodation, there is a recognized need to incorporate cultural, recreational, and community spaces within the site. Thus, the studio focuses on extensions, exploring strategies to address broader programmatic needs through subtle yet impactful interventions. Students will propose small, nuanced interventions as additions to the existing buildings, transforming them into vibrant gathering places through the addition of new functions that serve cultural or recreational purposes.. Improving the site's livability, fostering community engagement, and enriching cultural vibrancy. With steel as the primary structural material, these structures should be compact, capable of expressing essential architectural elements, and adaptable to different contexts.
