Studio introduction:
35 years have passed since its inception, area surrounding the Nexus World has been transformed into a typical modernised middle-class suburb, where low/medium density housing blocks and oversized shopping malls defines the neighborhood. Those residents who first moved into the visionary Nexus World find themselves coping with the architectural ideals once promised. The area surrounding Nexus World lacks the energy and social activities it once envisioned. On the other hand, Hong Kong faces a similar demographic aging issue, yet the existence of the Municipal Services Building (MSB) arguably acts as social condenser for the neighborhood, providing a series of diversified social activities for residents of all ages. The agenda of the studio is to postulate whether the current development model in Fukuoka fits an aging society that was never anticipated when it was first implemented. Can this studio offer an alternate approach by looking through the lens of our own unique architectural prototype in Hong Kong? Can mixed-use MSB/Housing be an “exported” typology that offer an alternative solution to address such social and sub-urban phenomena? The design proposition shall also offer an opportunity to reflect critically on the shortcomings, if any, on the original Nexus World development. The students’ design projects become the Next Nexus; a.k.a NEXTUS.
