Studio introduction:
Focusing on a site in Beijing, this studio proposes to look again at the qualities of this and other historical and contemporary urban typologies to see what we can learn to address the contemporary housing crisis. How might we be able to refurbish and reinvigorate the existing neighbourhoods in an incremental way to create a sustainable solution to the housing problem which engages with its social, environmental and economic contexts simultaneously? What might a new neighbourhood and housing for collective living and working look like? How might we increase the density in the existing neighbourhoods?
Socially, the retention of the existing buildings enables the continuation of existing communities. China’s increasing aging population constitute many of the existing residents. How might new architectural interventions support this ageing community? How might your proposals provide opportunities for more intergenerational living? How might the existing and new or future communities engage with processes
of change to forge collective identities? How might your design proposals embrace change over time?
