MUMBAI CALLING: RETHINKING CHAWL HOUSING FOR DHARAVI VIA 3D PRINTING TECHNOLOGY
Advisor:
Christian Lange
Student(s):
Wong, Jing Hymn Joseph
Studio introduction:
The studio has two main objectives. On the one hand, the studio takes the typology of the Chawl as a point of departure to develop alternative building types for high-density housing in Dharavi. The studio seeks solutions that move away from the generic two-dimensional approach to housing. Instead, the studio is interested in architectural answers that offer highly three-dimensional interconnected neighborhoods, achieving new modes of urban living that bring on board the unique programmatic set-up this neighborhood entails.
On the other hand the studio seeks novel solution that takes on board the latest advancements in 3D printing technology. Technology in the building industry is often driven by efficiency and economic factors but rarely by creativity. 3d printing offers many opportunities but time will tell whether architects will play a leading role in this development, or whether they are watching from the side-line. As architects, we must ask, what are the advantages of these new ways of making? Can the technology solve issues we could not address previously? Are we merely replacing old ways of making with new ones without asking the right questions? The studio investigates such questions and develops individual answers to the subject.
