HOUSING AN ANCIENT CITY-VILLAGE-CITY: IN THE "INSTANT" CITY SHENZHEN
Project name: Unsheathing the horizontal
Advisor:
Tao Zhu
Student(s):
Indrawan, Valdy
Studio introduction:
People often call Shenzhen an ‘instant city’, implying that ‘it does not have history’ and ‘it transformed from a small fishing village to a contemporary metropolis overnight’. But the NAT has a record of urban history over 2,000 years since the Jin Dynasty, and its current existing city wall and street structure can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty of 200 years ago. In fact, Shenzhen is not an ‘instant city,’ but one with a long urban history. The NAT was the urban origin of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. How to identify the place’s historical value or age value, while it has few authentic heritages left, besides its city wall relic fragments, street structure, and several courtyard compounds? How to design the new buildings suitable for such an ‘Ancient City-Village-City’ whose own historicity becomes hard to see and define?
