MAKING COMFORT: FRAGMENTARY UNDERSTANDING OF DETAIL TO CREATE CIVIC COMFORT

Project name: MTB (Municipal Truss Building)

Advisor:

David Magennis

Student(s):

Yu, Mo Hei Springer

Studio introduction:

The studio has two points of interest. The first is to continue our interest in working with timber structures but with the added complexity of housing a hardworking public building. Continuing a low carbon construction methodology, again structurally and now in terms of the performance of the envelope, to reduce the energy consumption required to service such large demanding spaces. What expression does this have and how can the depth of this construction method be used to the advantage of an environmental concern. The second is to understand specifically how elements within a building’s composition contribute to the feeling of comfort or the civic character of a building. Fragmentary precedent studies will provide the understanding of the measure of these elements and their function, effect, form, material etc to control the privacy, familiarity of a place. These lessons will be used as a means to critique the existing condition of the site. It will also become the knowledge bank informing the basis of the creation of spaces of civic comfort within the new MSB. It is hoped that this will allow the students realise the these often-overlooked methods of city building, these specific details focused on elements of inhabitation, comfort privacy will allow sufficient grounds to develop powerful buildings that provide a comfortable civic ness to users and the wider city.
