Studio introduction:
The Municipal Services Building (MSB) type began in 1978 to provide district-based enhancement of public life led by the government. The essence of the MSB is in hybridizing the seemingly irreconcilable functional demands within a confined urban context. Most MSB programs consist of food markets, cooked-food stalls, a library, and a gymnasium. The building is operated by district municipalities and provides its constituents with work opportunities, intellectual growth, and leisurely events. In recent years, the role of these MSBs in Hong Kong has been diminishing. The government has stopped developing this type of building for many decades, and various new forms and operations of public and commercial programs have emerged to cater to the changing needs of the community.
This studio challenges students to observe and analyze the history of the city and climate change, speculate on the past, re-examine the present, and rethink the potential of the Municipal Services Building (MSB) for the public in Hong Kong.
