WALK-UP HOUSE

Advisor:

Chiara Oggioni

Student(s):

Tang, Yuet Yi Daisy

Studio introduction:

The relationship between architecture and sexuality opens up reflections on how the built environment is capable of mirroring, reinforcing or challenging societal norms around inclusivity and diversity. One-Woman units are single rooms scattered in walk-up buildings across Hong Kong, as a result of the unique legal situation surrounding the sex industry in the city. The presence of sex workers, clients, families and businesses within the same space raises questions of spatial control, circulation, privacy, and co-existence of individual, collective, and public programs. Taking on the concept of ‘walk-up space’, the Studio aims to re-imagine the walk-up typology by considering the circulation from the public ground level upwards as the starting point to explore new possible spatial dynamics for collective living.
