Studio introduction:
In 1982, Guangzhou, Tung Wu Estates (東湖新村) was built as the first commercial housing project in mainland China. It marked the beginning of housing commercialization, which originated from economic reform in the 1980s. The housing distribution has experienced a transition from welfare allocation to market distribution. This process has led to a change in how people live together. When people lived in the work units distributed by the government, they often shared toilets and kitchens with neighbors who mainly were their co-workers. During housing commercialization, developers built gated communities with buildings that were 5-7 floors with 2-3 units on each floor and more space in each unit.
From 1979 to 2015, China introduced the One-Child Policy as a strategy for population management aimed at reducing the nation’s population growth by limiting families to having only one child. Two hundred sixty million people, 1/5 of China’s population, are only-child. Those only-child are now entering their 30s. Taking care of their kids and the elderly becomes a pressured reality they cannot escape.
The commercial housing projects developed in the 90s are more than 30 years old, and most of those communities lack public space and vertical access for the elderly. As the buildings age, cities such as Hangzhou and Shanghai add elevators by plugging them into the building façade and creating parks between blocks. The studio focuses on re-thinking a building unit with the needs of only-child generations. By understanding their different family structures and specific spatial expectations, the studio aims to create ageless houses and a new collective living that caters to the distinct demands of this special demographic.
