Studio introduction:
The project at hand focuses on the reimagining of old traditional tenement houses (Tong Lau) with the aim of revitalizing an old neighborhood in Tai Kok Shui, Hong Kong. This brief seeks to address the challenges of accommodating a diverse multigenerational population, including both an aging demographic and new young households. By creatively and adaptively reusing existing structures, the project aims to breathe new life into the neighborhood while preserving its unique heritage. On the other hand, Hong Kong faces significant challenges in terms of urban density and the utilization of rooftop spaces. The city’s limited land availability has resulted in high population density and a shortage of housing options. Additionally, the growing number of roof slumps presents an opportunity to utilize these spaces effectively for housing.
The design approach will carefully consider the needs and preferences of both the aging population and the young households, creating inclusive and adaptable living spaces that foster a robust community. The goal is to create a vibrant and sustainable dwelling community that respects its past while embracing the aspirations and requirements of its present and future inhabitants. The design should embrace the cohabitation of different generations, rethinking the traditional live-work typology and integrate new work-from-home typology, leverage underutilized roof spaces, and create a flexible dwelling cohabitation that caters to each household needs.
