BAAS Year 1 - Spring 2024

THE TAILORED ROOM

Advisor:

Anneli Giencke

Student(s):

Studio introduction:

The studio is interested in exploring spaces in the city that lie between contrasting aspects and shifting boundaries of soft/hard and inside/outside layered conditions. The heaviness of the physical, built environment is often superimposed by temporary and transformable, lightweight textile constructs that offer spatial layers of dynamic interactions. From the clothes we wear to the nomadic tents and lightweight tensile structures that provide shelter and comfort, fabric acts as a protective layer from the environment and creates transformative, ductile envelopes. The aim is to develop a proposal for a room that is created by layering from a two-dimensional surface to a three-dimensional volume, using fabric as a material for investigation and experimentation. Inspired by two-dimensional pattern cutting of garments to produce volumetric sheaths and garments, the studio will explore the fabrication and production of soft spaces conceived from surfaces to three-dimensional interstices that stretch/unfold/suspend/expand and compress.
