Studio introduction:

The studio aims to examine the future of Hong Kong by exploring its past and present. Taking inspiration from Umberto Eco’s “Island of the Day Before,” the studio highlights how an individual’s preoccupation with their past can hinder their ability to solve present-day problems. Similarly, Hong Kong residents may be trapped in a figurative and geographical island, with a sense of imagined nostalgia that inhibits their ability to envision the future. Through this studio, students question the genius loci, the spirit of the place, and its evolution over the next few decades. Utilizing the past and current status quo of the city as a catalyst, the studio employs the concept of healing to address the issue of Hong Kong’s future. The studio comprises two groups, each focusing on a different form of healing. The first group aims to achieve social healing by creating a reconfigurable structure that facilitates social interaction. The structure’s geometry will compel human contact, whether physical or visual, as a means of addressing the psychological implications of the Covid-19 pandemic’s lack of gathering. The second group aims to achieve architectural healing by enhancing the environmental behavior of existing buildings. The group will explore ways to facilitate non-human life within the built fabric of Hong Kong, without proposing entirely new structures.
