This studio studies Dongmen, Shenzhen, a region that reflects the evolution of commerce in contemporary China. Energised by the city’s young population coming from across the country, Dongmen served working-class customers with affordable products and provided opportunities for small businesses, riding the tide of the city’s economic growth. It is a place of both attention and tension; the haphazard development of businesses poses challenges to municipal management, with politics shaping the demolition and renewal of architecture. Meanwhile, bottom-up attempts continue to discover new opportunities. Since late 2023, regional influencers began live streaming on the main street, transforming the public space into a site for performance. In this studio, students seek synergies among these forces and proposed architectural interventions for both dwelling and production.
