BEYOND THE BOOKSTORE: ARCHITECTURE AND THE LOCAL

Project name: Village reimagined

Advisor:

Jianxiang He

Student(s):

Zhou, Yiheng Kally

Studio introduction:

This design studio examines the changing relationship between urban and rural territories in the Pearl River Delta, focusing on Tangkou Township in Kaiping. Once a thriving site of emigration and cultural exchange, Tangkou’s revitalisation, through projects like the Librairie Avant-Garde bookstore, reveals both the potential and contradictions of rural regeneration. Students investigate how architecture can act as social infrastructure: bridging cultural memory, ecology, and contemporary development. Through fieldwork, documentation, and design at multiple scales, the studio explores new models of collective dwelling and community integration. Projects evolve from ethnographic observation and material experimentation toward site-specific architectural proposals that respond to Tangkou’s social, cultural, and environmental context. The studio aims to cultivate a design methodology rooted in locality and process, challenging conventional urban paradigms in the Greater Bay Area.
