Studio introduction:

Hong Kong public housing, actually Hong Kong modern collective housing in general, is based on the simple extrusion of relatively uniform floor plans, compact and repetitive. This not only produces monotonous building forms but hampers social interaction in the community. Some housing estates may have been planned with some community facilities, but they are mostly centralized in one location based on the modernist principle of functional segregation. How do we rethink convenience and comfort in the dense context of Hong Kong? How do we promote diversity within the rigid framework of vertical housing? How do we update the spectrum of social spaces according to contemporary needs in our ever-changing world? The studio aims to animate the monotonous housing tower by injecting small communal facilities into its repetitive mass. It is a collaborative laboratory to rethink vertical living in Hong Kong and develop a more varied and expressive urban vision for this lively metropolis. The task is to strategically replace some of the housing units with shared public functions: stores, restaurants, libraries, study areas, meeting and gathering spaces, playgrounds, and even art and exhibition spaces. These new insertions may take on a foreign parasitic form, but programmatically they complement the collective housing host, forming a mutually beneficial symbiotic whole.
